Monsignor John Pollard’s An Account of Our Hope provides us with a survey of what he rightly calls the “age of catechesis”—the fifty years since the Second Vatican Council that culminated in the publication of the Catechism of the Catholic Church and how it sparked a renewal of catechesis and evangelization.

Msgr. Pollard’s extensive background in catechetics and academic work put him touch with key players over the years in which the Catechism of the Catholic Church was composed and implemented.

As a member of the staff of the Bishops’ Conference, Msgr. Pollard was there as the final steps in the Catechism’s preparation for promulgation unfolded and served a role in its publication and eventual implementation in the United States.

An Account of Our Hope provides insight into how the Catechism was prepared and how it’s used in our parishes and schools. Chapter topics include:

  • An Introduction to the Catechism of the Catholic Church and Implications for the New Evangelization
  • The Historicity and Patristic Sources of the Catechism of the Catholic Church
  • The Collegial Character of the Catechism of the Catholic Church
  • Pastoral Priority in Planning for the Implementation of the Catechism
  • Remembering some of the key people connected to the Catechism of the Catholic Church

We can be grateful to Monsignor Pollard for providing a very valuable service to the catechetical community in the English-speaking world with the publication of An Account of Our Hope. The title is adapted from the First Letter of Saint James…[and] provides us with a detailed account of the catechetical landscape in the United States since the Second Vatican Council.

An Account of Our Hope properly situates the Catechism among other catechetical documents in the recent history of the Church’s catechetical mission. It also gives us a glimpse into how it was prepared to be used in our parishes and schools. As such, it enriches our ministry of evangelization.
